Running Backs
π΄ Out β Alvin Kamara (Saints): Kamara’s recovery window is coming into focus. The Saints back sprained his MCL in a joint practice with the Cowboys in mid-August and is expected to miss at least a month, putting Week 1 in serious doubt and Week 2 against Baltimore right at the edge of his recovery timeline. It would mark just the second time in Kamara’s career he’s opened a season on the shelf. With New Orleans already thin at the position, Kendre Miller and Devin Neal are the names to watch for early-season work in the Saints backfield. Fantasy Action: Add both Miller and Neal off waivers now β New Orleans looks likely to use a committee, so grabbing both hedges against whichever one the coaching staff leans on early.
π΄ Out β Trevor Etienne (Panthers): Carolina’s backfield took its own hit when Etienne suffered an ankle injury in the preseason finale and was placed on injured reserve with a designation to return, keeping him out a minimum of four games. Etienne had been a depth piece behind Chuba Hubbard and Jonathan Brooks, and per beat reporters covering the team, AJ Dillon now slides into the No. 3 role behind that pair β notable given Hubbard himself is managing a hamstring issue. Etienne’s absence also leaves a hole in the return game, so expect Carolina to sort out kick and punt duties elsewhere in the meantime. Fantasy Action: Roster AJ Dillon as the direct Chuba Hubbard handcuff given Hubbard’s own hamstring concern β if Hubbard sits any time soon, Dillon is in line for real volume.
π΄ Out β Zach Charbonnet (Seahawks): There’s also a less optimistic update out of Seattle. Despite earlier optimism about his pace of recovery, the Seahawks have officially opened Charbonnet on reserve/PUP following his offseason ACL surgery, with a realistic return window that doesn’t arrive until between Halloween and Thanksgiving. That pushes Jadarian Price into early-season complementary work in the Seattle backfield. Fantasy Action: Add Jadarian Price now in all formats β he inherits real early-season touches, while Charbonnet himself is only a stash in deep dynasty/keeper leagues given the multi-month runway.
Wide Receivers
π‘ Questionable β Christian Kirk (49ers): San Francisco’s receiver room keeps taking on water. Kirk has been dealing with a calf strain throughout camp, and head coach Kyle Shanahan acknowledged this week that Kirk could open the regular season on injured reserve β no final call has been made, but the trend line is not encouraging. Paired with Ricky Pearsall’s already-announced season-ending injury, the 49ers are heading into Week 1 with a genuinely stretched-thin receiver corps. Fantasy Action: Speculatively add Jauan Jennings now, before an IR announcement makes him a hot waiver target β he’s the clearest beneficiary of both the Pearsall and pending Kirk absences atop San Francisco’s depth chart.
Tight Ends
π΄ Out β Luke Musgrave (Packers): Green Bay’s Musgrave is opening the season on reserve/PUP with a neck issue, which locks him out for a minimum of four games and thins out an already crowded Packers tight end room. Fantasy Action: Not worth a roster spot on the wire β look elsewhere for a streaming tight end rather than banking on Green Bay’s next-man-up option.
π’ Likely β Kenyon Sadiq (Jets): There’s better news out of New York, where Sadiq is trending toward availability for Week 1 despite a hernia issue. Head coach Aaron Glenn confirmed this week that Sadiq remains on track to suit up for the opener against Tennessee. Fantasy Action: No move needed β if you already rostered Sadiq as a streaming option, stay the course.
Quarterbacks
π΄ Out β Dillon Gabriel (Browns): Cleveland placed the rookie on injured reserve with a back injury, a move that reportedly came as a surprise given he’d shown no signs of a problem in his preseason finale outing. Gabriel is out a minimum of four games but wasn’t waived, and the Browns kept three other quarterbacks on the roster. Deshaun Watson is the Week 1 starter with Shedeur Sanders behind him. Fantasy Action: No action in standard leagues; in deep Superflex/dynasty formats simply hold Gabriel and revisit Cleveland’s QB competition once he’s eligible to return.
π’ Likely β J.J. McCarthy (Vikings): McCarthy is dealing with an ankle issue that kept him out of the preseason finale, but he remains on the 53-man roster and is considered day-to-day rather than facing an extended absence. Nothing here suggests he’s at risk of missing real time once Week 1 arrives. Fantasy Action: No lineup changes needed for McCarthy or his pass-catchers heading into the opener, but keep an eye on the Friday injury report just in case.
As always, keep an eye on practice reports the rest of this week β several of these situations (Kirk, McCarthy, Musgrave) are still fluid with roster and IR decisions still being finalized around the league.
