The headline out of Green Bay overshadows everything else in fantasy circles today, with a starting running back’s Week 1 availability now in real doubt. Elsewhere, Tampa Bay’s receiver room and Detroit’s backfield both have situations worth tracking as teams round into final Week 1 shape.
Running Backs
Josh Jacobs has been placed on the NFL’s Commissioner’s Exempt List following misdemeanor charges of battery and criminal damage to property tied to a May arrest. While on the list, he can’t practice or attend games, and head coach Matt LaFleur said he couldn’t confirm whether Jacobs will be available for Green Bay’s September 13 opener against Minnesota. With Jacobs out indefinitely, the Packers backfield now points to MarShawn Lloyd, Chris Brooks and newly-acquired Kaleb Johnson (picked up in a trade with Pittsburgh) to soak up early-down and passing-game work. Lloyd looks like the best bet for early volume if Jacobs remains out, with Johnson worth speculative add consideration as a change-of-pace option. This is a fluid legal situation, so check back for updates before locking in Week 1 lineups.
In Detroit, Isiah Pacheco is now dealing with two issues — the MCL sprain that’s kept him out of practice, plus a more recent back injury. Despite that, Dan Campbell said he expects Pacheco available for the season opener against New Orleans. He profiles as the backup to Jahmyr Gibbs rather than a true timeshare piece, so the fantasy impact is mostly limited to Gibbs’ workload and handcuff value, but it’s worth watching his practice reps ramp up over the next week.
Smaller note: Texans RB Noah Whittington is back to full health after the ankle injury that sidelined him in late August, clearing up what had been a thin depth chart note in Houston.
Wide Receivers
Emeka Egbuka’s toe sprain — suffered when he was rolled up on in practice — tested as minor on Friday, and the Buccaneers are optimistic he’ll be available for the September 13 opener at Cincinnati. Once healthy, he projects as Tampa Bay’s clear top receiving option. The complication is that Jalen McMillan is dealing with his own knee and leg issues at the same time, which muddies the picture for both players’ Week 1 workloads. Chris Godwin steps into a bigger short-term role with both banged up, and rookie third-rounder Ted Hurst is the name to know if either Egbuka or McMillan needs to miss time.
The Jacobs situation is the one to watch most closely this week given how much it could reshape the Packers backfield, and we’ll keep tracking the Tampa Bay WR room as both Egbuka and McMillan work through their respective injuries ahead of final Week 1 roster and injury designations.
