Lamar Jackson Needs Thumb Surgery, Headed to IR After Loss to Bills

Lamar Jackson, Baltimore Ravens quarterback

Posted Sunday, November 1, 2026 at 8:20 PM ET

Lamar Jackson’s season took a sudden, serious turn Sunday. The Ravens quarterback suffered a right thumb injury on Baltimore’s first offensive play against Buffalo, needs surgery, and is headed to injured reserve — and backup Tyler Huntley didn’t make it to halftime either, forcing undrafted rookie Joe Fagnano into his NFL debut as the Bills rolled to a 36-10 win.

It’s the headline injury from a Sunday that also cost Buffalo receiver Joshua Palmer his afternoon, knocked Arizona running back Jeremiyah Love out of an overtime thriller, and left Cardinals receiver Michael Wilson playing through two broken ribs. Here’s what fantasy managers need to know heading into Week 9.

Baltimore’s quarterback room unravels in Buffalo

Jackson’s right hand collided with Buffalo pass rusher Gregory Rousseau as he threw on the Ravens’ very first offensive snap. He went straight to the locker room and was ruled out roughly 15 minutes later. It was a brutal twist: Jackson had just returned from missing three games with an ankle injury, and the comeback lasted one play.

Tyler Huntley stepped in and lasted into the second quarter before a right toe injury knocked him out too — ruled out at halftime. That forced undrafted rookie Joe Fagnano, the Ravens’ third quarterback, into his first regular-season snaps. Fagnano moved the offense early, connecting with Josh Cuevas and Ja’Kobi Lane to reach Buffalo’s 7-yard line, but a sack and a missed 34-yard field goal stalled that drive, and he was later picked off on a tipped pass intended for Zay Flowers.

Baltimore fell to 4-4 with its third straight loss. Head coach Jesse Minter confirmed after the game that Jackson “will undergo surgery and be placed on injured reserve,” but stopped short of ruling him out for the year: “Potentially, but we’ll see where it’s at.” No timeline has been set, and Minter had no immediate update on Huntley’s toe.

Fantasy action: add Fagnano now in any format where Baltimore skill players matter, especially superflex and dynasty leagues — he’s in line to make his first career start Thursday night at home against Jacksonville. Zay Flowers and Rashod Bateman remain must-starts as Baltimore’s clear top targets regardless of who’s throwing them the ball. Cut Jackson in shallow single-QB leagues; stash him only if you have IR-slot room and some tolerance for risk.

Joshua Palmer (BUF WR) was downgraded from Doubtful to Out ahead of the Bills’ win over Baltimore. Khalil Shakir and Keon Coleman were Buffalo’s lead healthy receivers, with DJ Moore also playing through a questionable tag.

Jeremiyah Love (ARI RB) re-aggravated the ankle that already cost him two games, exiting in the first half of Arizona’s 33-30 overtime win over Dallas and not returning. Tyler Allgeier took over the Cardinals’ backfield once again. Dallas tight end Jake Ferguson also left that game early with an ankle injury and did not return, leaving the Cowboys without a clear healthy tight end.

Michael Wilson (ARI WR) went into the medical tent late in the first half after crashing to the turf chasing an overthrown pass, then returned and played through the pain in overtime — he told reporters afterward he has two broken ribs. He finished with eight catches for 111 yards, including the game-tying touchdown with six seconds left in regulation. Check Arizona’s Thursday practice report before trusting him again.
