The best buy on the board is Breece Hall, who was a limited participant Wednesday and whose own head coach says he is trending in the right direction after five missed games. The clearest sell is Braelon Allen, who has just posted a career-high 147 rushing yards in the last week his job is likely to be his alone.
| Player | Team/Pos | Move | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Breece Hall | NYJ RB | Buy | Limited Wednesday, trending to play, no designation yet |
| Braelon Allen | NYJ RB | Sell | Career day arrives as Hall’s return ends the window |
| Amon-Ra St. Brown | DET WR | Buy | Ribs listing came off a walkthrough he was limited in |
| Emeka Egbuka | TB WR | Sell | Concussion cleared, but the foot has cost two games |
| Rashee Rice | KC WR | Hold-and-buy | Hamstring and knee in one line; bid after Friday |
Buy: Breece Hall (NYJ RB)
Hall has not played since September 27, and five straight absences is long enough that plenty of managers have mentally written him off and stopped checking. The Wednesday report says otherwise: Aaron Glenn said Hall would be a limited participant, and told reporters he is “trending in the right direction,” per RotoWire relaying ESPN’s Rich Cimini and per ClutchPoints relaying the same post and SNY. New York has not issued a game designation yet, which is precisely the gap you want to trade into. NBC Sports also carried Jets offensive coordinator Frank Reich saying he assumes Hall is still the team’s lead back when he returns. One caveat worth being straight about: RotoWire and ClutchPoints call it a quadriceps injury while the Yahoo-syndicated SB Nation report lists it as a knee — when sources split on the body part, the participation level is the signal, and the participation level went up this week. Buy Hall now, before Friday’s designation: offer a healthy RB3 or a WR3 and you are paying backup-back prices for a back whose coordinator just called him the guy.
Sell: Braelon Allen (NYJ RB)
Allen is the textbook version of value propped up by a teammate’s absence. He made a fifth consecutive start with Hall out and turned it into a career-high 147 rushing yards and a touchdown on 21 carries in the loss to Las Vegas, plus two catches for six yards, per RotoWire and NBC Sports — his fourth straight game over 100 scrimmage yards, and 565 rushing yards on the season by Yahoo’s count. That is exactly the stat line that makes a league-mate email you first. It is also the line that comes with an expiry date: Glenn has said only that “both will play,” and RotoWire’s read is that the Jets “could opt for a backfield split” the moment Hall is cleared. Allen remains the RB2 on New York’s depth chart in our roster store. Sell Allen this week while his price is set by Sunday’s box score rather than by next Sunday’s snap share — a startable WR or a back with a clear path to touches is a good return, and you should take it before Hall’s designation lands.
Buy: Amon-Ra St. Brown (DET WR)
St. Brown turned up on Wednesday’s report with a rib injury nobody knew about, which is the kind of line that makes a nervous manager float a trade. Read the rest of it. Nolan Bianchi of the Detroit News, carried by CBS Sports and in his own copy, had St. Brown as a limited participant, and Bianchi’s framing was that being listed limited is itself the positive — he had been a non-participant at Monday’s session with an ankle. CBS described Wednesday as a walkthrough rather than a full practice, a detail the Detroit News copy does not repeat, so treat the participation reading as softer than a real practice would give you. The underlying production never wobbled: he made a brief exit from Sunday’s 19-15 win over Minnesota and came back to finish with seven catches on eight targets for 46 yards. Buy St. Brown from anyone spooked by a new body part on a receiver who has never left the field for long — a mid-tier WR1 price for a top-handful receiver in a 50.5-point game at Miami is a bargain. He is Questionable in our feed as of Thursday morning.
Sell: Emeka Egbuka (TB WR)
We called Egbuka a buy last week on the view that his concussion clearance was days away rather than weeks. The clearance arrived — RotoWire reports he cleared the protocol on Friday — and he still has not played. That is the part that changes the call. His Week 9 listing is the foot alone, he did not practise Wednesday, and the most Tampa Bay would offer is that he was able to run on a side field, with Todd Bowles saying the staff would see how he felt Thursday. That is two missed games and a third in doubt from an injury that was supposed to be the secondary problem. A foot injury on a receiver who wins with footwork off the line is the one that lingers quietly, and his price is still being set by the scarier, now-resolved half of his listing. Sell Egbuka into that mispricing while the headline still reads like a concussion story — a healthy WR3 is a better asset than Tampa Bay’s number one outside receiver with no practice reps and no stated return date.
Hold-and-buy: Rashee Rice (KC WR)
Rice is listed with a hamstring and a knee and was limited Wednesday, per RotoWire and NBC Sports. Both halves of that have history: he missed time with the hamstring earlier this season and rehabbed knee surgery over the offseason, and he returned in Week 8 with a seven-catch, 53-yard, one-touchdown line. RotoWire’s own read is that a limited Wednesday “does not mean his Week 9 status is in jeopardy,” but that the Chiefs may be exercising caution with their top receiver. Caution is the operative word for the trade too. A re-aggravated hamstring on a receiver in his first weeks back is the failure mode that costs you a buy-low, and Thursday and Friday’s reports will tell you more than any offer you can make today. Do not buy Rice this morning; watch Friday’s designation, and if he practises fully, make the offer before Sunday’s game against the Jets at home as 9.5-point favourites puts the price back up. Fair warning: our own Week 9 rankings board, published Tuesday, still describes Rice as back with no designation. Wednesday’s report has moved past that, and the report is newer.
Frequently asked
Should I trade for Breece Hall while he’s hurt?
Yes — this is the best buy-low window of Week 9, because Hall was a limited participant Wednesday, Aaron Glenn says he is trending in the right direction, and the Jets have not issued a designation yet. The price moves the moment that designation lands, so the offer has to go out before Friday. Check his live status on our injury report first.
Is Braelon Allen worth keeping now that Breece Hall is back?
No — Allen is a sell this week, because his five-game run of starts came entirely from Hall’s absence, Glenn has said only that both backs will play, and RotoWire expects a split once Hall is cleared. Allen is still the RB2 on the depth chart. A career-high 147-yard game is the best price you will get for him, and prices like that do not survive the return of the starter.
Will Rashee Rice play in Week 9?
It is unsettled as of Thursday morning — Rice was limited Wednesday with a hamstring and a knee, and RotoWire reads that as the Chiefs being cautious rather than his status being in danger. That is why he is a hold-and-buy rather than a buy: you want Friday’s designation before you pay. Our live board is the place to check once those designations land.
Designations move fast between Wednesday and Friday, so check the live board on our injury report before you send or accept anything, run any of these through our trade analyzer to see whether the swap actually clears your bar, and line the names up against this week’s half-PPR rankings — which were published Tuesday and, on Rashee Rice at least, read differently to Wednesday’s practice report. Where this post and that board disagree, the practice report is newer.
